Athabasca University is Canada's largest online and distance education university. More than 35, 000 students worldwide are currently completing AU programs and courses through online and distance learning as well as in classrooms at partner institutions.
We are dedicated to removing the barriers that traditionally restrict access to and success in university level studies. We are committed to increasing the quality of educational opportunity for adult learners worldwide. The focus is on flexibility, putting you in control of course choices and program options.
The university offers over 600 courses and some 60 undergraduate, graduate, certificate and diploma programs. We have partnership agreements with over 200 institutions and professional bodies and transfer arrangements which permit students who hold a college diploma to receive block credit towards a further degree. The university is also committed to prior learning assessment, recognizing proven learning from the workplace and other settings.
You can do your entire degree at Athabasca University or fast track your program at another institution by taking extra courses through AU.
There are three ways to take courses at Athabasca University.
Individualized Study Most Athabasca University students take courses in which they decide when to work on their course, submit assignments and write examinations. In other words, the schedule on which they work is individualized. While many students work on courses out of their homes, some study at their place of work, a local library or another suitable location.
Grouped (Paced) Study Some students prefer the discipline and structure that working in a group provides. Unlike their individualized study counterparts, students taking grouped study courses are required to complete their work on a pre-set schedule with a group of fellow students in a classroom setting. For a list of grouped study courses, see: http: //www.athabascau.ca .
For a list of collaborating institutions where grouped study courses are available, see http: //www.athabascau.ca
These classes are ideal for learners who like the discipline of a schedule, like contact with fellow students and instructors and want the flexibility of online study. Courses are completed on the Internet within a 13-week timetable starting in September and January, similar to semester offerings at traditional universities. Students and instructors communicate through discussion groups and e-mail. Technology enables learning teams across countries and continents to study collaboratively, while synchronous (real time) activities encourage students to communicate with their classmates. Student participation and completion of assignments on time are required.
Our student support services set AU apart. A network of academic staff, advisors, counsellors, tutors, help desk personnel and support staff provide students with information and advice. Advisors can help you choose appropriate courses. They can help you plan a complete academic program. Counsellors can help you chart your career path. In each course, you have an assigned tutor for individualized academic help.
Online resources include study, writing and exam assistance, ESL resources, access to marks, course information and other services.
